14 November 2018, ‘Tales and Songs of the Dart’, at Stoke Gabriel Church, Church Walk, Stoke Gabriel, near Totnes, TQ9 6SD. John Risdon, renowned local historian, and Cosgrave & Banks, superb folk duo, will take you on a magical tour of the extraordinary history and beauty of the Dart estuary, through tales, images, and music. John Risdon’s love of our local history, and ability to convey it in fascinating and vivid tales, is legendary. The tales are accompanied with his beautiful images of local scenes and historical paintings. Cosgrave & Banks are a superb folk duo, who have met with acclaim in many of the village halls and folk clubs of Devon, and further afield. John helped Steve Banks to produce the CD, ‘Dart Songs’, which Steve’s then band, Blue Jewel, recorded in 2010. Steve created songs from many of John’s amazing tales from the history of the Dart estuary. Cosgrave & Banks will perform tracks from this album, in between John’s tales and images. The amazing tales you will hear, in prose and in song, include: the Battle of Blackpool Sands, 1402 – 13 years before Agincourt. The epic story of the Portuguese treasure galleon, the Madre de Dios, captured and brought to Dartmouth in 1592; Memory Tree – the US troops preparing for the D-Day landings in 1942, who carved their sweethearts’ names in trees at Sandridge Barton. And much more! 7.30pm. Tickets £8.50 available on the door, include wine in the interval. For more info, click here. For info about the church, www.stokegabrielchurch.co.uk. All proceeds go to Totnes Drop in Centre, helping the homeless and needy in Totnes and surrounding areas.
16 November 2018, Brixham Library. Details to follow. Due to popular demand! We are delighted to have been invited back to this entrepreneurial library… Well, ‘library’, yes, in a sense… but only in the sense that Clark Kent is just an awkward guy with big specs, or Bruce Wayne is just a multi-billionaire with chips on his shoulders… For, by night, this ordinary-seeming library transforms by a magical alchemical process, whose secret is known only to a revered few within the inner sanctum, into the Brixham music venue for those-in-the-know. So keep your ear to the ground, and with any luck, you might come by a ticket to hear the South Devon folk duo that many people are talking about at South Devon’s’ most exclusive-illusive venue…
Our current programme is a rich smörgåsbord of beautiful music, traditional and contemporary, from Britain, Europe (mainly France, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe) and beyond, featuring tracks from our first CD, Warp & Weft., and with some great new tunes and songs for 2018.
- England, Ireland and Scotland, including original tunes and songs by Mike and Steve (including a couple of favourites from the Dart Songs album Steve recorded with Blue Jewel.)
- France, including Brittany
- Sweden, Norway
- Russia, Rumania and the Balkans
- USA and Canada
